To close this year’s English lessons, the 4th grade elementary students at Colegio Concepción explored one of the most enduring stories in English literature: King Arthur and the Sword. Guided by their English teachers, Ms. Mariela González and Mr. Marcos Riveros, this extensive reading project, carried out during November, invited students into a world of knights, castles, courage, and destiny.
As a way of celebrating the end of the reading process, the class gathered to watch The Sword in the Stone, Disney’s classic adaptation of the Arthurian legend. This final activity allowed students to enjoy a shared cultural experience and see how an ancient story, first told in medieval manuscripts and retold for centuries, continues to inspire new forms of storytelling.
Watching the film helped students make connections between the book and its adaptation: characters, magical elements, the symbolism of the sword, and Arthur’s journey from an ordinary child to a future leader. It also highlighted how classic literature influences modern media, from movies and TV shows to games and music.
The legend of King Arthur remains a cornerstone of English-speaking cultures. The image of a young boy pulling a sword from a stone has shaped countless narratives about bravery, identity, and discovering one’s role in the world. Introducing classic stories like this one helps students understand cultural references they will encounter throughout their lives, while also strengthening their reading skills, imagination, and engagement with English.
Our 4th graders approached this project with enthusiasm and curiosity, showing growing confidence as readers and active participants in English lessons. Concluding the year with this shared experience was a meaningful way to celebrate their progress and the rich literary universe they explored during this final unit.
Colegio Concepción congratulates our 4th grade elementary level students for completing their extensive reading project and extends appreciation to the families and teachers who supported this inspiring learning experience.
