A Bread-Making Experience: 3rd Graders on a Culinary Adventure

This August, our 3rd-grade students (A, B, and C) embarked on a unique cross-curricular journey that blended Spanish, English, and hands-on experience in a truly delicious way. Organised by Ms. Johanna Pantoja and Ms. María Luisa Díaz, Spanish teachers from our Elementary Department, together with the English Immersion, this activity turned an academic unit into an engaging, real-world experience.
The project linked directly with the Spanish class, where students have been learning to write informative texts, focusing specifically on the structure of recipes. To bring this learning to life, the students followed step-by-step instructions to bake their own bread: weighing ingredients, mixing dry elements, adding warm water, kneading the dough, and finally letting it rest before baking.
Thanks to the English Immersion Program, the activity also connected with broader linguistic and cultural aspects: students compared the use of the imperative mood in Spanish and English when giving instructions, explored the origin of the word “sandwich” from the English town of Sandwich in Kent, and reflected on the history of breadmaking, tracing it back to Ancient Egypt around 4000 B.C.
Throughout the session, students were fully engaged—working in groups, following the recipe carefully, and delighting in the process as the smell of freshly baked bread filled the room. More than just an exercise, the activity created meaningful connections across subjects, proving that Spanish and English can come together to enrich learning in fun and creative ways.
This experience reflects our school’s commitment to cross-curricular projects that nurture creativity, communication, and cultural understanding. It was wonderful to see our students proudly share their bread and their knowledge—reminding us that learning can be both educational and delicious!
