On Monday 9th, the final session of our beloved Book Club brought a unique and engaging experience for our students. To wrap up our latest readings, we explored the world of literature through film, watching three carefully selected movies that sparked rich discussions and critical thinking.
First Stop: The Lion King
We began with The Lion King, delving into its striking parallels with Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Students explored how themes like greed, vengeance, love, and hate transcend time, connecting plays written over 500 years ago to modern-day narratives. This comparison opened a fascinating discussion about the universality of human emotions and struggles.
Second Feature: The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
Next, we watched The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, a movie adaptation of one of our club’s recent reads. Students analyzed the similarities and differences between the book and the film, critiquing how the story was translated to the screen. The lively debate highlighted the challenges and creativity involved in adapting beloved books for the cinema.
Grand Finale: The Great Gatsby
To close the session, we immersed ourselves in the world of The Great Gatsby. Having read the novel, students were enthralled by the dazzling costumes, breathtaking imagery, and stellar acting in the film. This final discussion offered insights into how visual storytelling can enhance and reinterpret literary masterpieces.
This cinematic journey was a memorable way to conclude our Book Club, providing students with a fresh perspective on literature. By bridging the gap between books and their film adaptations, we deepened our appreciation for storytelling across different mediums.
We are proud of our students for their thoughtful participation and love for literature and look forward to many more enriching experiences in the future!
