Sweet Moments with Second Graders: Cocadas Cooking Activity

On Monday, November 18th, Wednesday, November 20th, and Thursday, November 21st, our second-grade students from classes A, B, and C participated in a delightful cooking activity organised by the Immersion Plan during their English lessons. This hands-on experience was led by Mr. Marcos Riveros and their English language teacher, Ivonne Figueroa, in the school canteen.
The students learned how to make Cocadas, a delicious treat from Mexico. The recipe was simple yet fun—students used manjar (a popular Chilean caramel spread) and crumbled biscuits to create these sweet delights. We keep the name «Cocadas» in its original form, honouring its cultural origin, just as we do with «manjar.»
Cocadas Recipe
Ingredients:
● 1 cup of crumbled biscuits
● 1/2 cup of manjar (Chilean caramel spread)
● Shredded coconut (optional for rolling)
Instructions:
1. Mix the crumbled biscuits with the manjar in a bowl until you get a thick, sticky dough.
2. Take small portions of the mixture and shape them into bite-sized balls.
3. Roll each ball in shredded coconut for an extra touch of sweetness (optional).
4. Place the Cocadas in the fridge for 10-15 minutes to set.
After preparing their Cocadas, the students enjoyed a lovely picnic on the grass, sharing their treats and enjoying a communal snack time.
One of the key objectives of this activity was to emphasise the importance of hygiene in the kitchen. The students learned the valuable habit of washing their hands before and after cooking, as well as before eating—a crucial lesson for everyday health!
We are proud of our young chefs for their enthusiasm and teamwork. It was a great way to mix fun, culture, and learning all in one!
