At Colegio Concepción, we believe the best way to teach is through hands-on, engaging experiences that ignite curiosity and critical thinking in our students. With this goal in mind, the English immersion program, in coordination with Juega STEM, offered 3rd and 4th-grade students an innovative way to learn science—through play.
On Thursday, October 10th, and Friday, October 11th, our 3rd and 4th-grade students had the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in an exciting learning experience. This interactive workshop, under the name of “Juega STEM: A Scientific Experience,” was conducted in both English and Spanish, allowing our students to explore scientific concepts through hands-on activities. It reinforced their understanding of the scientific method while also enhancing their language skills in an engaging, bilingual environment.
Juega STEM employs interactive, playful methodologies to teach essential scientific skills, transforming our students into budding scientists as they explore key concepts from the natural sciences. Each workshop is carefully designed to align with the learning objectives of the Chilean school curriculum. Students engaged in experimental investigations on topics such as the states of matter, the application of forces, and technology applied to solving everyday problems. The following learning objectives were covered:
● OA-9: Demonstrating, through experimental investigation, that matter has mass and occupies space.
● OA-10: Comparing the three states of matter based on their ability to flow, change shape, and volume.
● OA-13: Identifying, through experiments, different types of forces and their effects on objects.
Students actively participated in hands-on experiments such as creating paper rockets and observing chemical reactions with vinegar and baking soda. Each student was equipped with their own safety gear, including aprons and goggles, ensuring a safe and enriching experience. This immersive activity marks the first part of an ongoing project, with a follow-up planned in their Natural Sciences classes, where students will continue to apply what they’ve learned in a more formal classroom setting. The integration of both language and science in this initiative showcases our commitment to providing a holistic, interdisciplinary educational experience.
Special Thanks
A heartfelt thank you goes out to our Centro General de Padres for their generous support and funding of this project. Their commitment to enhancing our students’ educational experiences made this event possible and truly memorable.
