On Wednesday, June 11th, our 8th-grade students from Class A had a unique opportunity to share their knowledge of biology with 2nd-grade students in an engaging and interactive way. During their biology class, the 8th-grade students studied historical scientific figures and then worked together with Mr. Marcos from the English Immersion Plan to create a storytelling activity based on what they had learned. This collaborative effort was organized by the English Immersion Plan, with the support of their biology teacher, Ms. Iowana Maltes.
The 8th-grade students introduced themselves as key figures in the history of science, such as August Weismann and Zacharias Janssen, and presented their discoveries in an «I am…» storytelling format. The activity allowed the 8th graders to creatively communicate complex scientific concepts, such as DNA and the microscope, in a way that was both educational and fun for the younger students.
The 2nd-grade students, who were in their science class at the time, were thrilled by the topic. It was an exciting opportunity for them to be exposed to higher-level students presenting on such fascinating subjects. The storytelling format helped the 2nd graders grasp important science concepts while also being immersed in the English language. By participating in the activity, the younger students not only learned about the significance of historical scientific contributions but also gained valuable exposure to English, as the entire session was conducted in English.
Thanks to the collaboration between Ms. Iowana Maltes, Mr. Marcos, and the 8th-grade students, this activity provided a great learning experience for both grade levels. The students were able to engage in meaningful learning while fostering a sense of community and collaboration across different age groups.
