Play as a Tool for Learning: A Reflection on Winning, Losing, and Participation

On Wednesday, June 11th, 3rd-grade elementary students participated in a fun and educational bingo activity that combined math learning with a reflection on the importance of participation, winning, and losing. Held in the school canteen, this activity was a collaborative effort between the Counselling and Maths classes, with a focus on using play to teach valuable life lessons. Organized by the English Immersion Plan, the session was supported by 3rd-grade B head teacher Ms. Claudia Cuevas and 3rd-grade C Maths teacher Ms. Daniela Matamala.

The bingo game was designed to integrate numbers and math problems with the excitement of play. For example, students solved simple math problems, such as 10+11, which corresponded to the numbers on their bingo cards. This creative combination of math and play made learning engaging and interactive.

The main goals of the activity were to reinforce the use of English in a playful context and to promote emotional regulation. Through their participation, students reflected on the meaning of winning and losing, emphasizing the importance of fair play and active involvement. The activity also helped them develop a deeper understanding of tolerance, empathy, and how to gracefully handle both success and setbacks.

Thanks to the collaboration of Ms. Claudia Cuevas and Ms. Daniela Matamala, the students enjoyed a fun and meaningful experience that strengthened their academic skills and contributed to their emotional and social growth.
