Celebrating the Legacy of Ancient Greece: A Collaborative Marathon Activity

On June 10th, our 3rd-grade students from levels A, B, and C participated in an exciting marathon event that brought the legacy of Ancient Greece to life. This interdisciplinary activity, organised by the English Immersion Plan, involved the teamwork of Mr. Marcos Riveros, Mr. Eugenio Poblete (Physical Education teacher), and Ms. Maria Luisa Díaz (Social Studies teacher).
The event focused on the enduring influence of Ancient Greece, particularly the Olympic Games and their contributions to modern society. Students engaged in two classes—Social Studies and Physical Education—where they explored key aspects of Greek civilization, including democracy, history, theater, philosophy, art, sculpture, mythology, geometry, and the creation of the Olympic Games. In the Social Studies class, students reflected on how these elements continue to impact our present-day societies and cultures.
The Physical Education class set the stage for the marathon, where students experienced the excitement of the ancient Olympic Games firsthand. They competed in a race, reflecting the spirit of the original Olympics, with the first, second, and third-place winners receiving medals representing modern Olympic times and olive wreaths, a tribute to the ancient Greek tradition of honoring their victors.
This engaging and dynamic activity was a wonderful way for students to not only learn about the legacy of Ancient Greece but also experience it firsthand through a fun and collaborative event. By combining physical activity, academic learning, and language use, this marathon was a fantastic example of cross-curricular integration and a memorable celebration of the lasting influence of ancient Greek culture.
