The School’s Literary Mailbox: Celebrating Reading and Fostering Creativity Amongst Students

In an effort to promote a passion for reading and stimulate creativity, during Book and Reading Week, Professor Ms. Patricia Álvarez, along with the students of the Literature Workshop, and the English immersion professor, Mr. Marcos Riveros, created and implemented an innovative literary mailbox. This emerged from the aforementioned students’ interest in personally engaging with their favorite books and authors, both within the curriculum and outside of it, such as sagas. This new member of the educational community has generated great enthusiasm amongst the students, who awaited its arrival to leave their literary letters to favorite authors and characters, with whom they wish to communicate through the sublime aspect of literary language. This friendly messenger will be placed in a visible location in the school each Book Week, inviting students to deposit their own writings, poems, stories, or drawings related to literature during periods deemed appropriate and pertinent by the language arts, English, or other subjects.
Since its opening in our school’s hall, the mailbox has received a large number of contributions from the first students invited to use it, demonstrating a real interest and motivation amongst young people to express themselves and share their ideas in writing. Our school regularly organises activities and workshops based on the submitted works, thus fostering a dynamic and participatory learning environment. The mailbox will therefore remain in Room No. 2, Silent Reading, in our library, throughout the school year, available to teachers who request it within the strategies and dynamics of the different subjects, as another form of collaborative curricular work to promote the creation, expression, and production of written material for the comprehensive development of our students. While waiting to return to the Hall during another Book and Reading Week.
Professors Ms. Patricia Álvarez and Mr. Marcos Riveros, along with their respective students, who were users of the mailbox during the two weeks they recently spent in the hall, believe that this activity, based on recent results, not only encourages reading but also helps students develop writing skills, critical thinking, and self-confidence. Those responsible for the project hope that this project will continue to grow in number of users and educational levels and serve as an example for other educational institutions seeking to promote culture and creativity in their students. The aforementioned teachers express their gratitude to our principal, Mr. Víctor Viveros Vidal, who, upon learning of this budding idea, enthusiastically and collaboratively supported it. Thanks to this, the mailbox proved to be an excellent way to turn reading into a fun and enriching experience.
