At Colegio Concepcion, we believe in blending practical skills with linguistic exercises to create an immersive learning experience. On June the 11th, our 7th graders “B” participated in a unique activity that combined their love for cooking with their English language studies. Under the guidance of Mr. Marcos Riveros from the English Immersion program and Ms. Mariela Gonzalez from the English department, the students were tasked with preparing «completos» (hotdogs) following a detailed recipe written in English.
This innovative activity was born from the 7th-grade curriculum’s focus on countable and uncountable nouns. By using a recipe that required careful measurement and understanding of ingredients, students could see firsthand how countable and uncountable nouns can change their nature based on context. The recipe instructions, written in the imperative mood, provided a practical application of grammatical concepts.
The session took place in our state-of-the-art kitchen, where students were ready to dive into the culinary challenge. Each group crafted their own recipes, carefully noting ingredients like «two tomatoes» (countable) and «some mayonnaise» (uncountable). As they chopped, mixed, and assembled their completos, the room buzzed with excitement and collaboration.
The activity was not only about cooking but also about enhancing language proficiency. Students had to read, comprehend, and follow the English instructions precisely. This hands-on approach reinforced their understanding of the imperative mood and noun types in a fun and engaging way.
The enthusiasm and creativity of the students were palpable. They navigated through the recipes with confidence, showcasing their culinary and language skills. The result? Delicious completos and a deeper grasp of English grammar.
This unique integration of cooking and English classes fostered a dynamic learning environment, proving that education can be both practical and enjoyable. We invite you to check out the highlights of this exciting session and see how our students cooked up some language skills while having a blast in the kitchen.
