Colegio Concepción was invited to participate in a special educational event organised by the Faculty of Humanities and Art at Universidad de Concepción, in collaboration with the United States Embassy in Chile. The activity was held in the context of America250, the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Independence of the United States.
The event brought together different learning experiences connected to history, language, culture, and international dialogue. Students were invited to take part in a panel of experts with three talks in English, focused on different aspects related to the United States. These included American English, with a special focus on Tennessee English, the Declaration of Independence and aspects of the U.S. Government, and the importance of learning English as a tool for future academic and professional paths. This created an opportunity to approach the English language not only as a subject, but also as a way to understand historical processes, cultural identity, and academic discussion.
The activity also included a Coffee Chat, designed as a space for English language practice in a more relaxed and conversational context. This moment was especially valuable because students from different schools had the opportunity to meet, share ideas, interact with one another, and create new connections using English as a common language. In this way, the experience went beyond listening to talks, becoming a real communicative space where students could practise English with purpose and confidence.
For our school community, opportunities like this are meaningful because they connect language learning with culture, history, higher education, and authentic academic environments. By participating in activities organised by universities and international institutions, students are able to broaden their view of the world and understand English as a bridge to knowledge, communication, and intercultural learning.
