Cross-Curricular Learning Across history and English

As part of a cross-curricular project term, Colegio Concepcion’s fourth grade students studied the Inca civilization in both their English and history lessons. The students enjoyed learning a crucial civilization in English and history as well as producing some excellent work in the process.
Fourth grade English students deepen their knowledge about the Inca’s civilization in English while the class have viewed this Civilization in history lesson. Ms. Camila Moisan and Mr.Marcos Riveros were able to share a different perspective deepen their knowledge in their daily life and culture using the target language. It provided an important interpretation
of the Incas for our students, reliant on historical and cultural context, justifying the use of a grammatical structure which, was the Past Simple Tense, within the story.
The students elaborated, a poster with Inca’s daily routine and a mask which was used during their presentation. The teachers helped the students to put the story into its historical and cultural context, using the language as a means for learning.
As a result, this theme was embraced and represented in different many pieces of work by the students.
In recent years, there has been greater emphasis placed on cross-curricular approaches, due to the fact that this method has proven to be effective for students of all ages. By mixing and blending academic subjects together, students can combine something they are passionate about with something they may not be. Cross-curricular learning is similar to disguised learning in that you engage and educate students without them even knowing, as it allows students to think creatively and outside the box.
We thank Ms. Moisan and Mr. Riveros for this important cross-curricular learning opportunity. As a department, we invite you to appreciate the pictures of the activity, along with the joy shown in each of the faces of its participants.
