On Friday, September 4th, Colegio Concepción shared its environmental and educational work through an interview on “Nuevo Día,” a programme broadcast by Radio El Conquistador. The conversation featured Ms. Iowanna Maltés Castillo, Biology teacher and member of the Sustainability Committee, together with Rocío Oyarzúa, student from 2nd grade Senior Area, who represented the student voice in this meaningful dialogue about sustainability at our school.
During the interview, both participants reflected on the ecological and social commitment that has become an important part of Colegio Concepción’s educational identity. They explained how sustainability is not approached as an isolated topic, but as a transversal line of work connected to classroom learning, student participation, community action, and care for the local environment.
One of the key aspects highlighted during the conversation was the school’s long-standing commitment to environmental education. Colegio Concepción has maintained 12 years of Environmental Excellence, obtaining for the third consecutive time the highest level of environmental certification through the National System of Environmental Certification for Educational Establishments. This achievement reflects the coordinated work of students, teachers, families, and different school teams.
The interview also gave visibility to the multidisciplinary projects developed at the school, especially those that connect Science, ICT, and English. Through the collaboration between the Ecobrigade, the ICT Extracurricular Class, and the English Immersion Programme, students have been able to investigate environmental issues, document their learning, and communicate their findings in English. In this way, English becomes a meaningful communicative tool for sharing scientific and environmental knowledge with a wider audience.
Another important topic was the school’s connection with the local territory. The work carried out around spaces such as Humedal Los Boldos, Cerro Manquimávida, and Parque Nacional Nonguén has allowed students to recognise the environmental value of their surroundings and understand the importance of protecting local ecosystems. These experiences strengthen not only ecological awareness, but also a sense of belonging and responsibility towards the community.
Through this radio interview, Colegio Concepción also reaffirmed its commitment to integral education. Sustainability is understood not only as scientific knowledge, but also as a way to develop empathy, responsibility, collaboration, and active participation. Students are encouraged to become agents of change, capable of observing their environment, asking questions, proposing solutions, and contributing to the care of our planet.
