One Sentence, One Quote: Axel’s Creative Journey Through Under Shifting Stars

As part of our English Immersion Plan’s Book Club — a space designed for advanced senior years students who are already proficient in English — we are always looking for ways to explore literature in fresh, creative ways. This time, the spotlight is on Axel Carrasco from 9th grade Senior Years level class D, who took on a unique challenge while reading the novel Under Shifting Stars written by Alexandra Latos
With dedication and insight, Axel summarised each of the 27 chapters of the book in just one sentence, distilling the heart of every moment into a few carefully chosen words. But he didn’t stop there — for every chapter, he also selected his favourite quote, the line that he felt best captured its essence.
Under Shifting Stars is a heartfelt story about twin sisters Audrey and Clare, navigating grief after the loss of their brother Adam, while also facing questions of identity, family, and belonging. Told in alternating perspectives, the novel draws readers into themes of forgiveness, self-discovery, and the ties that hold us together even when life seems to pull us apart.
Through our book club discussions, Axel brought his own perspective to the novel, showing not only his deep understanding of the story but also a real talent for distilling complex emotions into concise, powerful words. His work is a great example of how literature can be approached with both analytical thinking and creative expression — something we value deeply in our English Immersion Plan.
We invite our school community to visit the attached document and read Axel’s complete chapter summaries and selected quotes. Whether you’ve read Under Shifting Stars before or are just curious about it, you’ll find in his work a thoughtful and inspiring way to experience the story.
