A Journey Through the Stars: 3rd Graders Begin Their Universe Project with Storytelling

Early this April, our 3rd-grade students (A, B, and C) embarked on a cosmic journey to explore the mysteries of the universe through a vibrant and cross-curricular project that brings together Science, English, and Art. Organised by the English Immersion Plan in collaboration with the Natural Science subject—part of our Department of Primary Education and led by Ms. Daniela Matamala and Ms. Claudia Cuevas—this project marks a creative and educational milestone in our students’ learning journey.
The first stage of this three-part project began with an interactive storytelling session, where students were introduced to an English-inspired version of El Universo Según Carlota, originally written by Chilean astronomer and author Teresa Paneque. The story, adapted and translated especially for this activity, was brought to life in English by Mr. Marcos from the Immersion Plan, sparking the imagination of the children as they discovered the celestial wonders of the cosmos.
Throughout the session, students were highly engaged—listening attentively, participating actively, and sharing their thoughts and questions as the story unfolded. The storytelling not only ignited curiosity and wonder but also created a meaningful opportunity to strengthen their English language skills in a dynamic and age-appropriate way.
This activity laid the foundation for the next phases of the project. Students will soon explore key concepts related to space in more depth and, later, showcase their learning through a collaborative, creative display that brings together all three classes.
More than just a lesson, this experience reflects our school’s ongoing commitment to fostering global perspectives and encouraging students to develop their scientific understanding while communicating in English across diverse contexts.
