In our delightful cooking workshop, our 1st grade elementary students at Colegio Concepción rolled up their sleeves and dove into the world of traditional Chilean cuisine by making their very own empanadas! For some of our young chefs, this was their first time crafting this beloved dish, while others excitedly shared memories of cooking empanadas with their grandmothers. The workshop was filled with laughter, flour-dusted smiles, and the warm spirit of sharing—a perfect way to kick off the month of September.
The Significance of Empanadas in Chilean Culture
Empanadas hold a special place in the hearts of Chileans, especially as we approach the 18th of September, Chile’s National Holidays. These golden, flaky pastries are more than just food; they are a symbol of celebration, family, and tradition. During this month, households across the country prepare empanadas filled with various ingredients, coming together to enjoy one of Chile’s most iconic dishes. Whether filled with pino (a savoury mix of beef, onions, olives, and eggs), cheese, or even seafood, empanadas are a delicious way to honour Chile’s rich culinary heritage.
A Simple Empanada Dough Recipe
Making empanadas is a fun and rewarding activity that you can enjoy with your family at home. Here’s a simple recipe for the dough:
Ingredients:
● 4 cups of all-purpose flour
● 1 teaspoon of salt
● 1 cup of unsalted butter or lard, chilled and cut into small pieces
● 1 cup of cold water
● 1 egg, beaten (for brushing the tops)
Instructions:
1. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt.
2. Add the chilled butter or lard, and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to combine until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
3. Slowly add the cold water, a little at a time, mixing until the dough starts to come together.
4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it gently until it’s smooth.
5. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before using.
6. Once ready, roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut it into circles. Fill with your favourite ingredients, fold, and seal the edges with a fork.
7. Brush the tops with the beaten egg and bake at 180°C for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
As we continue to celebrate the start of September, we encourage our families to try making empanadas at home and enjoy the warmth and togetherness that this traditional dish brings. ¡Feliz Fiestas Patrias!
