Last week, students in the 7th grade B at Colegio Concepcion Pedro de Valdivia embarked on an exciting journey into the world of language learning, all while exploring the realms of modern media and digital communication. In a dynamic activity orchestrated by their English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher Mariela Gonzalez, the students delved into the art of simulated blogging and influencing, while igniting their creativity and linguistic skills.
The objective of the activity was twofold: to reinforce vocabulary related to daily routines in English and to provide students with a platform in which they could express themselves creatively. Recognising the ubiquitous influence of social media and blogging in today’s society, the EFL teacher unveiled an opportunity to leverage this fascination as a tool for language acquisition.
Under the guidance of their instructor, the students transformed into budding bloggers and influencers, envisioning themselves as personalities with a significant online following. Armed with vocabulary related to daily routines, they explored on crafting compelling narratives about their everyday lives, infused with vibrant descriptions and engaging anecdotes. The classroom was abuzz with enthusiasm as students brainstormed ideas, scripted dialogues, and rehearsed their roles. With the aid of digital technology, each group meticulously filmed and edited their video presentations, ensuring a polished and professional product.
The culmination of their efforts resulted in a series of captivating video blogs, wherein students showcased their linguistic prowess while offering glimpses of their imagined daily routines. From morning rituals to evening activities, each segment was rich with vocabulary pertinent to daily life, seamlessly integrated into the narrative.
The EFL class served as the ideal backdrop for this immersive learning experience, providing a supportive environment where students felt empowered to experiment with language and express themselves authentically. Through video blogging, they not only honed their foreign language skills but also cultivated essential competencies such as creativity, collaboration, and digital literacy.
In conclusion, the simulated blogging and influencing activity was a resounding success, integrating language learning objectives with contemporary media practices. Through digital storytelling, students expanded their linguistic repertoire while cultivating valuable 21st-century skills. This experience exemplified the innovative approaches necessary to engage and inspire modern learners, leaving a lasting impact that goes beyond the classroom.
