On Wednesday, May 29th, students from Colegio Concepción took part in an exciting salida pedagógica to the Humedal Desembocadura del Río Biobío, a protected natural sanctuary right here in our city. The visit was part of an ongoing initiative to engage students in environmental education and prepare for a future interdisciplinary activity that blends sustainability, technology, geography, and of course English!
This visit was attended by students from two extracurricular workshops—Ecobrigada and ICT—alongside their teachers Ms. María Patricia Salazar, Ms. Iowana Maltes, and Mr. Marcos Riveros. They were also joined by environmental experts from the local organization “Más Árboles, Menos Basura”, who acted as guides during the walk and shared their valuable knowledge about the unique ecosystem of the wetland.
The main purpose of this visit was to recognise and explore the site where a future “plogging” session will take place—an activity that combines jogging with collecting litter. During the upcoming event, students from the elective Geography class will participate, while Ecobrigada members will lead the environmental side of the activity, and ICT students will be in charge of documenting the experience and creating a behind-the-scenes «making-of» video.
During the outing, students learned about the local flora—including native, endemic, and introduced species—and discovered fascinating insects along the way, guided by a biologist specialised in entomology. It was an enriching experience that helped students deepen their connection with nature and understand the importance of protecting these fragile ecosystems.
This initiative is one more step in Colegio Concepción’s commitment to environmental awareness, interdisciplinary learning, and student leadership. We’re looking forward to the next stages of this meaningful project and are proud of the work our students and teachers are doing to care for our planet.
