Every child should be a reader

Children’s Book Week is the annual celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading. Every year, young people across our institutions participate by attending different types of events at schools, such as reading talks about specific thematic, out loud readings, puppetry, amongst others. The 2023 Children’s Book Week will take place during one dedicated week of celebration, between April 17th till April 21.

As teaching your children to immerse themselves in a good book is one of the most valuable things you can do. A childhood love of reading sets the stage for success as an adult; therefore, a child who loves reading will have an enquiring mind, a vivid imagination, and great problem-solving skills. Having said that, this year we started with the youngest members of our community paying homage to the aforementioned. They participated in the out loud reading of the story “Pete the Cat: Too Cool for School” book by James Dean and Kimberly Dean, a Story with a strong and very important moral since it is about being yourself, “if you want to be cool, just be you!” It is important to mention that this starting point was possible thank to our early child educator Macarena Peña and the English Department.

To conclude, reading with children nurtures a love of language and literacy. An association between caring adult interactions and books is developed from an early age. Children learn to appreciate reading as a time of enjoyment, relaxation and pleasure. Not to mention that reading strengthens relationships, develops literacy skills, supports language, stimulates brain development, and develops new knowledge.

And remember…
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”— Dr. Seuss, “I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!”
